The Partnership for Public Services and Boston Consulting Group recently released the annual rankings for the 2021 Best Places to Work in the Federal Government. Unfortunately, the results showed a dismal response to employee engagement across the board. Worse yet, employees were only 40.1% certain their leaders would “use the results of the 2021 Federal Employee Viewpoint Survey to make their agencies a better place to work,” as Drew Friedman explains. Of course, lower engagement is expected, given the evolution of the hybrid workplace over the last two years. Still, with the Federal Government and every sector of the U.S. workforce setting the tone for future working conditions, it’s imperative that these numbers rise.
I recently talked about thriving and the importance of our workforce focusing less on productivity and more on the well-being of our employees (that article can be found here). It’s important to reiterate that here. In a subsequent article, Friedman draws a clear line between burnout, survey fatigue, extensive workload, and the hybrid workplace. The hybrid workplace is a fixed system for the foreseeable future, but the symptoms don’t have to be. Employees are looking for shorter modules and more collaborative training environments that eliminate listening to someone talk on their computer screen for over 40 hours.
