The end of a calendar year is always a good time for reflection. We especially love to stop and consider the topics on our collective minds: what our clients want to hear about, what authors are writing about, and the magic that happens when those two come together to spark thinking and conversation.
A Record Number of Events in 2018 – and Some Interesting Trends
Hooks Book Events put together a record 100 events in 2018 — up from 86 in 2017. Of those, 35 were events with women authors — 35%, up from 24% in 2017. Congress isn’t the only place women are making gains; clearly, our clients want to hear what women have to say!
In another clear trend, clients looked at how Artificial Intelligence and other technological advances are affecting work and the economy, hosting a total of 12 events with nine different books and authors on those topics. Other popular topics included blockchain, leadership, cybersecurity, and perennial favorite Dan Pink’s study of the scientific secrets of perfect timing.
Here are some of the topics our clients chose to explore in 2018:

Gratitude for our Partners
Of course, none of this could happen without the support of our publishing friends, authors and clients. We would also like to give a shout out to our wonderful book store partners: Politics and Prose and Kramerbooks in DC, Harvard Book Store in Cambridge, MA, Parnassus Books in Nashville, TN, and 800-CEO-READ in Milwaukee. We are grateful for their support of our work and their tireless efforts to get your books to you on time!
Bulk Books for Bridge Builder Events
Thanks to all who sent us bulk book orders in 2018! With YOUR help we were able to produce 18 Bridge Builder Events in DC public schools in 2018; we gave away almost 1000 books, and we underwrote yoga and health classes for DC Students. You can learn more here.
We are already working on more of these events for 2019 and appreciate your continued support of this work. Please contact us for your book order needs.
Programs with A Purpose
We started a new series this year with our friends Leadership Greater Washington and A Wider Circle. The goal of Programs with a Purpose is to engage the business, government and nonprofit communities around solutions to the widening opportunity gap in our society.
Since July we have hosted Annie Lowrey discussing her book on Universal Basic Income, Give People Money, and Peter Georgescu for his book, Capitalists Arise.
We are fortunate to be hosting Pulitzer Prize winner Steve Pearlstein for a breakfast on Thursday, December 6 for a discussion about his new book, Can American Capitalism Survive? This is a free public event. Register here today!
On January 29 we will host Stephanie Land to talk about her book, Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother’s Will to Survive. We plan to produce more of these events in 2019; please let us know if you would like to learn more.
Looking Ahead to 2019
Our first Know Ahead List for 2019 is ready! Please contact us to receive your copy. Now is the time to start planning events. Take a look at our calendar too, we are scheduling events all the way to September and you may be interested in an author who is already scheduled to be in town. We would appreciate the opportunity to work with you on a thought leadership series for your target audience in 2019. Let’s set up a call to discuss the possibilities. Here are a few books published by authors who will be with our clients in the first quarter:
