In Building Social Business: The New Kind of Capitalism That Serves Humanity’s Most Pressing Needs, Yunus shows how social business has gone from being a theory to an inspiring practice, adopted by leading corporations, entrepreneurs, and social activists across Asia, South America, Europe and the Unites States. He demonstrates how social business transforms lives; offers practical guidance for those who want to create social businesses of their own; explains how public and corporate policies must adapt to make room for the social business model; and shows why social business holds the potential to redeem the failed promise of free-market enterprise.
Muhammad Yunus was born in Chittagong, Bangladesh the third of 14 children. He was educated at Dhaka University, and awarded a Fulbright scholarship to study economics at Vanderbilt University. He then served as chairman of the economics department at Chittagong University before devoting his life to providing financial and social services to the poorest of the poor as he developed the concept of microcredit, loans given to entrepreneurs too poor to qualify for traditional bank loans. Yunus is also the founder and managing director of Grameen Bank and in 2006, Yunus and the bank were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Yunus has received several other national and international honors and is the author of Banker to the Poor. He is one of the founding members of Global Elders and also serves on the board of directors of the United Nations Foundation, a public charity created in 1998 with entrepreneur and philanthropist Ted Turner to support United Nations causes.
