Bethesda, MD (January 11, 2010) — Hooks Book Events brings a new perspective to solving global challenges and the US government, forward-thinking corporations and area universities are taking note. From leadership and management to women’s issues, current events, finance and the environment, the renowned authors secured through Hooks Book Events are bringing new ideas to a wide variety of audiences.
“Our company is crossing the aisle to find innovative and empowering solutions to the problems facing our clients; that is what Hooks Book Events is really about,” says founder Perry Pidgeon Hooks. “We help organize gatherings that initiate real dialogue and provide a platform for change in the way we approach the challenging issues of our time.”
Hooks Book Events is the brainchild of Perry Pidgeon Hooks and Loretta Yenson. This minority women-owned business based in Bethesda, Maryland, specializes in providing low-cost book and author events in Washington, DC with recent expansion into the Boston marketplace. Authors featured in 2009 included Dr. Muhammad Yunus, Deepak Chopra, Greg Mortenson, Judith Jones, Stephen Dubner and Steven Levitt. Each came to Washington to share perspectives and expertise on addressing issues ranging from micro credit, education and new ways to approach the current financial crisis, to discovering the potential in others and the pleasures of cooking for one. Upcoming events are planned for the New Year as Hooks and Yenson have tapped best-selling authors such as Walter Isaacson, Andrew McAfee, Daniel Pink, Meg Whitman, Liaquat Ahamed and Linda Tarr-Whelan for Washington, DC appearances.
For over a decade, Perry Pidgeon Hooks has facilitated hundreds of book events and given thousands of people the opportunity to listen to new ideas delivered by some of the world’s top thinkers. With a background in financial services marketing, advertising and trade association management, Hooks was able to hone her skills in designing programs and author series that fit the needs of her clients. In 2007, Hooks co-founded Hooks Book Events with the help of her friend and neighbor Loretta Yenson, who worked for over 20 years in the banking industry in New York, DC and Boston.
Hooks Book Events organizes author events that have the power to transform the way people approach daily tasks. On December 3, 2009, the company orchestrated a sold out lecture with Greg Mortenson to discuss his new book, Stones Into Schools: Promoting Peace with Books, Not Bombs, in Afghanistan and Pakistan to learn about his ongoing efforts establishing schools for girls in Afghanistan. “This was an ideal event for us because, like Mortenson, we believe in the power of books over bombs,” says Loretta Yenson, Co-Founder of Hooks Book Events.
As demand for book-oriented events increases, Hooks and Yenson recently expanded to the Boston metro area, hiring Mary Kate Maco, former head of publicity for Harvard University Press, to open their new office. “The present economy has actually been a catalyst for growth at Hooks Book Events,” says Hooks. “With the new office, we can tap into the brilliant, thought-provoking authors from MIT, Harvard and Harvard Business School. It seemed only logical to also find places where these authors can speak about their new books and share their ideas which are of benefit to corporations and other organizations in the Boston area.”
